01 What Was Holding Their Local Search Rankings Back?
Four things: slow review growth, a Google listing that barely surfaced, out-of-sync directory listings, and a website that pulled no weight. Each one alone is survivable. Together they kept a well-run facility off the radar of nearly every renter in Shelby County.
- Slow review growth: reviews trickled in, and a 4.2 rating was not strong enough to win the click when renters compared two or three facilities side by side.
- Weak Google Business Profile: a Google Business Profile is what renters actually see when they search: the panel with the photos, rating, hours, and directions. Theirs barely surfaced for storage searches, so renters called competitors in Sidney and Troy instead.
- Inconsistent citations: citations are the copies of a business's contact details (the NAP: name, address, phone) scattered across online directories. Theirs had drifted out of sync, which chips away at Google's trust in the business.
- An underperforming website: the site was slow, missed the terms renters actually type, and gave AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot no clean signal about location, unit sizes, or availability.
