Self-Storage Local Search Rankings: From Invisible to Top 3 in Eight Weeks

From nearly invisible to a top 3 result across Shelby County. That is what eight weeks of review generation, Google Business Profile work, and AI search optimization did for this Houston, Ohio self-storage facility.

01 What Was Holding Their Local Search Rankings Back?

Four things: slow review growth, a Google listing that barely surfaced, out-of-sync directory listings, and a website that pulled no weight. Each one alone is survivable. Together they kept a well-run facility off the radar of nearly every renter in Shelby County.

  • Slow review growth: reviews trickled in, and a 4.2 rating was not strong enough to win the click when renters compared two or three facilities side by side.
  • Weak Google Business Profile: a Google Business Profile is what renters actually see when they search: the panel with the photos, rating, hours, and directions. Theirs barely surfaced for storage searches, so renters called competitors in Sidney and Troy instead.
  • Inconsistent citations: citations are the copies of a business's contact details (the NAP: name, address, phone) scattered across online directories. Theirs had drifted out of sync, which chips away at Google's trust in the business.
  • An underperforming website: the site was slow, missed the terms renters actually type, and gave AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot no clean signal about location, unit sizes, or availability.

02 How These Problems Cost Them Rentals

The cost showed up at the worst possible moment: the day a renter decides. Self-storage renters search, compare two or three options, and book within a day or two. If a facility is not sitting in the map pack, the three local names Google puts front and center, and does not look trustworthy at a glance, that rental goes to someone else. Low rankings, a middling rating, and a quiet website meant this client lost that short window again and again.

03 Our Solution: Four Workstreams in Eight Weeks

We matched each problem with its own workstream: review generation, Google Business Profile optimization, citation cleanup, and a website overhaul aimed at both Google and AI search. All four ran in parallel across the eight weeks.

Review Generation

We built a review request flow that reached renters shortly after move-in, with polite follow-ups for anyone who had not replied. That produced 13 new reviews over the engagement and moved the rating from 4.2 to 4.9, which changed how the facility looked at first glance.

Google Business Profile Optimization

We cleaned up the profile top to bottom: fixed the service categories, added the unit sizes and amenities renters search for, and published weekly keyword-targeted posts with facility photos. An active, complete profile reads as credible to Google and to the people scanning it.

Citation Cleanup and Ongoing Management

We rebuilt their presence across the local directories that matter, corrected every mismatched name, address, and phone number, and put ongoing management in place so nothing drifts again. Consistent citations are one of the strongest trust signals a local business can send Google.

Website and AI Search Optimization

We audited the site end to end, restructured the unit-size pages so renters and AI assistants both understand the offer instantly, sped the site up, and added the structured data AI assistants pull from when they answer questions like best storage near Houston, Ohio.

04 What Results Did They Get in Eight Weeks?

Calls nearly doubled, and the facility went from barely visible to one of the most seen storage options in Shelby County. Here is the full picture from their profile data:

  • Calls up 90%: more renters phoned about unit availability and pricing during their short decision window.
  • Website clicks up 270%: the rebuilt site finally converted the traffic the profile sent its way.
  • Impressions up 380%: renters searching around Houston, Sidney, Anna, Troy, and wider Shelby County now see the facility where they used to see competitors.
  • 13 new reviews, 4.2 to 4.9 stars: stronger social proof at exactly the moment renters compare facilities.

05 What is a Geogrid?

A geogrid is a before-and-after scoreboard for local rankings. We run the same search, in this case "self-storage facility", from a grid of points across the service area before the work starts and again after, and each point shows exactly where the business ranks at that spot. The color shift between the two grids tells the story on its own, no spin needed.

06 Understanding Our Client's Visibility Transformation Through a Geogrid

Geogrid comparison for a Houston, Ohio self-storage facility showing rankings for the keyword 'self-storage facility' improving from mostly 20+ on March 18, 2025 to a green-dominant grid with rankings of 1-5 across most of the service area on May 10, 2025
Our geogrid for the keyword "self-storage facility" across Shelby County. Left: March 18, 2025. Right: May 10, 2025.

Between March 18, 2025 and May 10, 2025, about eight weeks, our geogrid for "self-storage facility" flipped from red to green across the core of the service area. Share of Local Voice, our top-three coverage score across the grid, climbed from 1% to 21% in that window.

On the March 18 grid, the facility ranked outside the top 20 at most points. Only a small cluster of mid-pack rankings near Houston itself showed any visibility at all.

By May 10, rankings of 1 to 5 dominated the core, with the facility at or near the top for renters searching across Houston, New Bremen, Anna, Sidney, and the surrounding towns. The outer edges moved too, from 20+ into the low and mid teens. In our tracking, Average Top Geo Ranking improved from 18.5 to 12.2 and Average Geo Ranking from 11.3 to 8.6.

That map movement is exactly what showed up in the business numbers: 380% more impressions, 270% more clicks, and 90% more calls, because more renters found the facility at the moment they searched.
